A television mount listing will tell you it fits VESA 200×200 or 600×400, then assume you already know what that means. It is the easiest thing to get wrong when buying a mount online, and it is not a brand, a rating or a quality tier. It is a measurement, and you can take it yourself with a tape measure in about a minute.
This is a guide to reading that number, measuring your own television, and spotting the situations where the holes line up on paper but the mount still will not fit. Everything below comes from what manufacturers publish in their fitting instructions and listings. Your particular television and mount ship with their own documentation, and where anything here disagrees with it, the documentation governs.
What the VESA numbers describe
VESA is the Video Electronics Standards Association, the body behind the flat display mounting interface standard. In practice that standard means a grid of four threaded holes on the back of almost every flat panel television sold today. The number in a listing, written as 200×200 or 600×400, is the horizontal distance between hole centers followed by the vertical distance, both in millimeters.
So 400×200 means the two upper holes sit 400 mm apart, and the drop from an upper hole to the one directly beneath it is 200 mm. The first figure is always the horizontal one. Where a listing quotes a single number, such as VESA 100, the pattern is square.
Mounts rarely fit one pattern only. A bracket advertised for 600×400 usually carries slotted arms or a wide backplate that also accepts several smaller patterns underneath it. At the other end, the compact quick release mount listed for 13 to 42 inch screens stops at 200×200, and nothing will make it hold a wider pattern.
Measuring your own pattern
You do not need the manual and you do not need the model number. You need a tape measure and a few minutes.
- Look at the back of the television for four threaded holes arranged in a rectangle or a square, usually near the middle of the panel.
- Measure from the center of the top left hole to the center of the top right hole. That is your first figure.
- Measure from the center of the top left hole straight down to the center of the bottom left hole. That is your second figure.
- Record both in millimeters. Tape measures marked only in inches will work if you convert, but millimeters remove a rounding step and VESA is defined in metric.
Expect to land on a standard value: 75×75 and 100×100 on small screens and monitors, 200×200 and 300×300 in the middle, and 400×400 or 600×400 on larger panels. If your measurement falls a few millimeters off a standard figure, you almost certainly measured to a hole edge rather than a hole center. Measure again before you decide your television is unusual.
Weight and size limits sit alongside the pattern
A matching VESA pattern is a necessary condition, not a sufficient one. Every mount also carries a stated maximum load and a stated screen size range, and all three have to be satisfied at once. A bracket can accept your bolt pattern and still be wrong for your television because the panel is heavier than the bracket is rated to carry, or because the screen is physically wider than the arm geometry allows.
Screen weight is the figure people skip. Find your actual panel weight, without the stand, in the television manual or on the manufacturer specification page. Do not estimate from screen size. Panel weights at a given diagonal vary a lot between models and generations, and the difference between a light modern panel and an older heavy one can be substantial. When you have the number, choose a mount whose stated capacity sits comfortably above it rather than level with it. Load ratings from the manufacturer are the governing figure here, and a mount asked to carry more than it is rated for can fail.
When the holes line up but the mount still does not fit
Several things can defeat an otherwise correct match, and none of them appear in the VESA number.
Recessed or obstructed holes
Some televisions place the mounting holes at the bottom of a recess in the rear housing. The bolt then has to be long enough to cross that recess and still engage the thread properly. Mounts often ship with several bolt lengths and a set of spacers for exactly this reason. Using a bolt that is too short is a real failure mode, because only a thread or two ends up carrying the load.
Curved and tapered backs
A curved panel or a strongly tapered rear housing can leave the four holes on planes that do not sit flat against a bracket. Spacers usually resolve this, but check that the mount you are buying includes them rather than assuming.
Ports and cable clearance
A low profile bracket that holds the panel very close to the wall can block side or rear facing connectors. The tilting bracket in our piece on a low profile tilt mount for 37 to 75 inch screens is listed at 1.5 inches from the wall, which looks excellent on a flush installation and can be awkward if your television has downward facing HDMI ports and you use thick cables. Plan the cabling before you drill, not after.
Ceiling and specialty brackets follow the same rules
Nothing about VESA changes when the bracket leaves the wall. A ceiling drop such as the one in our overview of an adjustable ceiling mount for 26 to 65 inch screens still needs a matching bolt pattern, a load rating above your panel weight, and a fixing point rated for the load. The structural side simply matters more, because a ceiling fixing has gravity working against it in a less forgiving direction and there is no floor under the television.
What listings usually do not establish
Mount listings are consistently vague in a few places. They rarely state which bolt sizes are included, and M4, M6 and M8 are all common. They rarely state maximum bolt engagement depth. They often quote a screen size range without saying whether that range assumes a typical panel weight. And where a listing gives a wall thickness or a stud spacing assumption, it is usually written for United States framing at 16 inches on center, which will not describe every home.
Treat the listing as a shortlist filter and the manufacturer instruction sheet as the authority. If a bolt kit does not include a size that engages your television properly, stop and source the correct hardware rather than improvising with something from a drawer.
A short buying sequence
Measure the pattern. Find the panel weight without the stand. Note the screen diagonal. Check the wall you intend to use and what is behind it. Only then filter the wall and ceiling mount category for brackets that satisfy all four at once. Buying in that order takes a few extra minutes and removes almost every return.
One last point that is worth being blunt about. A television that comes off a wall can injure someone and will very likely destroy itself. VESA compatibility is only the first of several conditions that have to hold. Correct fixings for your wall type, a load rating with real margin, and installation that follows the manufacturer instructions matter just as much, and no article can promise an outcome for a wall it has not seen.
