Almost every television mount instruction sheet says the same thing in the first few pages: fix into the structural studs. It is easy to skim past, and it is the single instruction that most often separates an installation that lasts from one that comes off the wall. Plasterboard on its own is a surface, not a structure, and it was never intended to carry a hanging load.
Finding studs is not difficult, but it is worth doing properly rather than optimistically. This walks through the methods that actually work, how to confirm what you found, and what your options are when the framing refuses to line up with where you want the television.
What you are looking for
In a typical timber framed home, vertical studs run from floor to ceiling behind the plasterboard and are usually spaced at a regular interval. In the United States that interval is commonly 16 inches on center, with 24 inches also in use. Most television mount wall plates are sized deliberately so their outer bolt holes can reach two studs at 16 inch spacing.
Steel framing is common in newer construction and in apartments. It looks the same from the outside and needs different fixings, because a thin steel stud does not hold a wood screw. If you find framing that a magnet clings to strongly along a continuous vertical line, treat it as steel and check what the mount manufacturer specifies for that case.
Methods that work
An electronic stud finder
The obvious tool, and a good one, with two habits attached. Calibrate it on a section of wall you are confident is empty, and mark both edges of each stud rather than one point. Marking both edges gives you the stud width, and the center of that width is where your bolt wants to go. A single mark tells you a stud is somewhere nearby, which is not the same thing.
A strong magnet
Plasterboard is fixed to studs with screws or nails at regular intervals. A small neodymium magnet dragged slowly across the wall will catch on those fixings, and a vertical line of catches is a stud. This method is slow and it is very reliable, because it finds physical metal rather than inferring density. It also costs almost nothing and does not need batteries.
Measuring from a known reference
Framing is usually laid out from a corner or from a door opening. Once you have found one stud confidently, measure across in 16 inch steps and check each predicted position with the magnet or the stud finder. Predictions that keep landing on real studs are strong confirmation that you have understood the layout.
Confirming with a small pilot hole
Where the mount plate will cover it, a fine pilot hole drilled at your marked center will tell you immediately whether you hit timber. Resistance and wood dust mean a stud. Sudden give and a hollow feel means you missed. Only do this where the plate will hide the hole, and only after you have thought about what services might run in that wall.
Before any hole goes in the wall
Studs are not the only thing behind plasterboard. Electrical cables often run vertically beside studs and horizontally between outlets. Water pipes and waste pipes run through framing too, and central heating pipework can be anywhere. A combination detector that flags live wiring and metal is worth using, and even then it is sensible to avoid drilling directly above or below an outlet or a switch where cable runs are most likely.
If you are in any doubt about services in a wall, that is a reason to bring in someone qualified rather than a reason to drill carefully and hope.
When the studs are in the wrong place
This is the common frustration. You have measured your viewing position, marked your ideal center line, and the framing sits four inches to the left of it. There are a few honest responses.
Use a mount that can shift horizontally
Many articulating brackets let the arm sit off center from the wall plate, and some flat plates allow the panel to slide sideways after fixing. This is the cleanest solution when it is available, because the load still lands on structure.
Use a single stud mount within its rating
Some smaller mounts are designed and rated to fix to one stud. The quick release bracket listed for 13 to 42 inch screens states that it mounts to a single wall stud with the supplied hardware, which suits small panels where the load is modest. This is only acceptable where the manufacturer explicitly designed for it. Fixing a two stud plate to one stud because the second one was inconvenient is not the same thing and is not safe.
Reconsider the position
Sometimes the framing is telling you something useful. A television centered on the studs rather than on the sofa is often a smaller compromise than it sounds, especially with a bracket that tilts or swivels to correct the angle afterwards. Studless brackets, with clear eyes
Brackets that fix into plasterboard without studs do exist, and the no drill mount listed for 26 to 55 inch screens is an example that uses picture hanging pins rather than bolts. These have their place in rentals and in walls where framing is genuinely unreachable. They also depend entirely on the condition and thickness of the plasterboard, which no listing can know, and their stated capacities should be read conservatively. Follow the manufacturer instructions exactly, and if the wall surface is soft, damaged, or already repaired in that area, choose a different position.
Marking out and drilling
- Mark stud centers with a pencil, then check the marks with a level so you know your line is true.
- Hold the paper template or the wall plate itself against the wall and mark through the actual holes you plan to use.
- Drill pilot holes at the diameter the instructions specify. Oversized pilot holes reduce the grip of the fixing.
- Drive the lag bolts fully home so the plate sits tight to the wall with no gap behind it.
What none of this can promise
Wall construction varies enormously, and no guide can see your wall. Older homes may have lath and plaster over irregular framing. Some apartment walls are non structural partitions. Some plasterboard has already been patched where you want to drill. The manufacturer instructions and the stated load rating govern in every case, and a mount that is under rated or fixed into something that is not structure can fail and bring a television down with it. When the wall does not make sense, stop and get a professional opinion, then choose from the mount range with that information in hand.
