Ultrasonic pest repellents promise a quiet, chemical free way to keep rodents and insects out of a home or garden. They sell in large numbers, the listings are confident, and the underlying evidence is weak. That combination is worth setting out plainly rather than repeating the marketing.

What the devices emit

A typical unit contains a transducer driven at a frequency above human hearing, powered either from a wall socket, a battery pack or a small solar panel. The mechanism claimed varies quite a lot between products, and a listing that claims several at once is usually the least specific about any of them.

What the published evidence shows

This is the section that matters. Independent laboratory and field assessments of ultrasonic pest devices have repeatedly failed to show a meaningful, sustained reduction in pest activity. University extension programmes that test these products have generally concluded they do not work as advertised against rodents or common household insects, and consumer protection regulators have previously taken action against marketers of ultrasonic pest devices over unsupported efficacy claims.

Three specific problems come up again and again. Ultrasound does not pass through walls or solid objects, so a plug in unit protects at most the room it is in and not even the shadow behind a sofa. Rodents habituate quickly, and any avoidance observed in early trials tends to disappear within days once the animals learn the sound predicts nothing. And a pest that has food, water and shelter in a building has strong reasons to tolerate a noise it can simply move a short distance away from.

None of that means every buyer is unhappy. Published owner reviews for these products include people who report fewer sightings. What is missing is any controlled evidence that the device, rather than the season, the weather or the tidy up that usually accompanies the purchase, produced the change.

Frequency is sometimes given as a range without saying whether the unit sweeps across it or sits at one point, and sweeping matters, because a fixed tone is the easiest thing for an animal to tune out.

None of the listings cite independent testing. Solar models rarely state how many hours of operation a full charge gives in winter light. Where a figure is absent from a product page here, it is absent, and the imported dimension data on this site is unreliable enough that it should not be used to fill the gap.

Effects on the animals you do want around

An ultrasonic emitter does not aim. Dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and other pets hear well into the ultrasonic range, and a device running continuously in a room is running continuously for them too.
