Full Motion, Tilting and Fixed TV Mounts Compared

Television mounts come in three broad types and the differences are not cosmetic. A fixed bracket, a tilting bracket and a full motion arm sit at different distances from the wall, cost different amounts, ask different things of your fixings, and solve genuinely different problems in a living room.

Picking the type first and the product second is a much better order than browsing by price. This is what each type actually does, where each one earns its place, and the trade you make when you choose it.

Fixed and low profile brackets

A fixed bracket holds the panel flat against the wall with no adjustment once installed. It is the cheapest type, the simplest to fit, and the one that gives the cleanest result, because a good low profile fixed mount can put the panel within an inch or two of the plaster.

The trade is total commitment. Your viewing angle, your height and your position are decided at the drilling stage and cannot be corrected afterwards. Cable access is also harder, because on many panels the connectors face sideways or downward into a very small gap. If you go fixed, sort the cabling out before the panel goes on the wall and check that the connectors you need are reachable at the depth the bracket sits.

Fixed suits a room where the seating is settled, the screen is at a sensible height, and glare is not a daily problem. It is the right answer more often than the market suggests.

Tilting brackets

A tilting bracket adds one axis: the panel pivots to angle the screen downward, and usually a small amount upward. It stays close to the wall, so the visual result is much closer to a fixed mount than to an arm.

Tilt exists for two reasons. It corrects a screen mounted above eye level, and it steers reflections away from a window or a lamp. The ranges are modest by design. The bracket in our write up of a low profile tilt mount for 37 to 75 inch screens lists 8 degrees of tilt while sitting 1.5 inches from the wall, and the heavy duty tilting bracket for 37 to 80 inch screens quotes a range from 15 degrees down to 3 degrees up. Those numbers sound small and they are enough, because a few degrees at viewing distance moves a reflection a long way.

Tilting is the sensible default when a screen has to sit higher than ideal, which in practice means most fireplace installations and a lot of small rooms.

Full motion arms

A full motion mount puts the panel on an articulating arm that extends from the wall, swivels left and right, and usually tilts as well. It is the most flexible type and the most demanding one.

What it buys you is a screen that can be aimed. In an open plan room where people watch from the sofa and from the kitchen, or in a room where the only available wall is not the wall you face, an arm is often the only thing that makes the layout work. The bracket described in our look at a full motion mount for 42 to 82 inch screens covers the large screen end of that idea, while the arm listed for 26 to 55 inch screens shows the geometry clearly: 16.7 inches of extension out, retracting to 2.8 inches against the wall, with a stated 77 lb capacity.

Corner mounting is a specialist case of the same idea. The corner oriented arm listed for 42 to 75 inch screens states up to 30 inches of extension with 90 degrees of swivel either way, which is what it takes to bring a screen out of a corner and square it to a sofa.

What extension costs you

An extended arm changes the physics at the wall plate. The same panel weight acting at the end of a long arm produces a much larger turning force on the fixings than the same panel held flat. This is why manufacturers are stricter about stud fixing on articulating models, why the wall plates are larger, and why the capacity figures on arms are often lower than on flat brackets of similar size.

Three practical consequences. Arms need good structure behind them, so an arm on questionable plasterboard is the worst combination in this whole article. Arms sit further from the wall even when retracted, so a mount that stows at 2.8 inches will never look like a fixed mount at 1.5 inches. And arms have more moving parts, which means more places for a component to loosen over time, so periodic checking of the fasteners is part of owning one.

Choosing between the three

  • Choose fixed when the screen will sit at eye level, the seating is settled, and you want the flattest possible result.
  • Choose tilting when the screen has to sit high, or when glare from a window or a light fitting is a daily annoyance.
  • Choose full motion when you need to watch from more than one place, when the only usable wall is off axis, when the corner is the only option, or when you need to reach connectors behind the panel regularly.

Cost tracks complexity in that order, and so does installation difficulty. It is also worth being realistic about how often an arm actually gets moved. Plenty of full motion brackets spend their lives fully retracted, and in that case the money and the extra load on the wall bought nothing.

What the type does not decide

Whichever type you pick, the same three limits still apply: the VESA pattern has to match, the stated load rating has to exceed your panel weight with margin, and the fixings have to suit your wall. Movement type is a fourth question layered on top of those, not a substitute for any of them. You can browse the full wall and ceiling mount range by type, but filter on the three hard limits first.

Finally, the safety point that applies to all three. Load ratings and manufacturer instructions govern, an under rated or badly fixed bracket can drop a television, and articulating arms concentrate more load on the wall than flat brackets do. If the structure behind your wall is uncertain, that uncertainty matters most on the type you were probably most excited about.
