Cable Management Behind a Wall Mounted TV

A wall mounted television looks clean for exactly as long as the cables do. Get that part wrong and you have a tidy panel with a bundle of black spaghetti hanging out of the bottom of it, which is the single most common complaint in published owner feedback about otherwise successful installations.

Cable management is also the part that is nearly impossible to fix later. Once the bracket is bolted to the wall and the panel is on it, your options narrow to whatever fits in the gap. This is how to plan the run before anything is drilled.

Count the cables before you choose the mount

Start with a list. Mains power for the panel. One HDMI per source. Ethernet if you use it. Optical or HDMI back to a soundbar or receiver. An aerial or satellite lead. It adds up faster than people expect, and the total decides how much depth you need behind the screen.

This is where mount type stops being an aesthetic choice. A very low profile bracket that holds the panel 1.2 or 1.5 inches from the wall gives a superb flush look and very little room for a thick HDMI head, particularly on panels where the connectors face sideways or downward. Check which way your ports point and how much clearance the plug bodies need, then pick the bracket depth accordingly.

Full motion arms are easier on this count. They stand further off the wall even when retracted, and they let you swing the panel out to reach the connectors when something changes, which is a genuine convenience over the years you own it.

Routes, in rough order of tidiness

In wall, behind the plasterboard

The cleanest result. Low voltage cables can usually be run down inside a stud bay between two brush plates or pass through fittings. Mains power is a different matter entirely and is governed by electrical regulations where you live. Running a standard power lead inside a wall is not generally acceptable, and the usual compliant answer is a proper recessed outlet behind the screen fitted by a qualified electrician. Treat that as a job to hand over rather than a weekend project.

Surface trunking

A paintable channel fixed to the wall face, carrying everything from the panel down to the furniture below. It is visible, and once painted to match the wall it disappears far better than most people assume. It is also fully reversible, which makes it the sensible choice in a rental.

Sleeves and clips

A fabric sleeve or a spiral wrap gathers a bundle into one soft column. It does not hide the run, it just makes it one object instead of six. Cheap, quick and much better than nothing.

Give the run somewhere to land

Cables have to end somewhere, and a mounted television with no furniture under it means every box sits on the floor. A wall shelf solves this and keeps the whole installation off the ground.

The two tier floating shelf described in our media shelving write up is built around exactly this problem, with a toothed cable management edge, stepless adjustable shelf spacing to suit different box heights, and 5 mm tempered glass on an aluminum frame. Shelves like that carry their own load rating and their own fixing requirements, and they need the same attention to studs and anchors as the mount itself.

If you would rather keep the boxes at floor level, a stand under the screen does the same job with more storage. The stand covered in our LED entertainment unit write up lists six rear routing holes and three hidden cabinets, which is the pattern to look for: a defined exit path at the back rather than a solid panel you have to cut.

Power is usually the awkward one

The signal cables are easy. Power is where installations get untidy, because the outlet is rarely where the television is. Three approaches, in order of preference.

  • A recessed outlet behind the panel, fitted by an electrician. Cleanest and fully compliant.
  • An outlet in the furniture below, with the panel lead dropping into trunking. Some stands build this in; the unit listed for televisions up to 70 inches states four standard outlets, two USB ports and a Type C port on the stand itself, which removes a lot of extension leads from the floor.
  • An extension lead run in trunking. Functional, visible, and fine when done neatly with an appropriately rated lead.

Whichever you choose, do not overload a single socket, and do not bury a power lead in a wall to make it look nicer.

Leave slack, and leave it deliberately

The most common cabling mistake is pulling everything tight for neatness. A tight cable is a lever on a connector and a hazard if anything is ever moved. On a full motion arm the requirement is larger and specific: the loop has to be long enough for the arm at full extension and full swivel, tested by hand before you tidy anything.

Mounts often help here. The ceiling bracket listed for 26 to 65 inch screens states integrated cable management along the column, which is the right idea for a drop mount where a loose cable would be very visible.

The order that saves the most time

  • List every cable and check which way the panel connectors face.
  • Choose bracket depth with those plug bodies in mind.
  • Decide the route and get any electrical work booked before you drill.
  • Connect everything and confirm it works with the panel resting near the bracket, before it is hung.
  • Hang the panel, then dress the cables with slack.

One caution to close on. Neatness never outranks structure. Do not cut into a stud to pass a cable, do not run mains through a wall to save a trunking run, and do not compromise a mount fixing to clear a cable path.
