How to Match a TV Wall Mount to Screen Size and Weight

Most television mounts are sold on two numbers: a screen size range and a maximum weight. Both are printed in every listing, both look simple, and the pair of them is where a surprising number of installations go wrong. Buyers filter on the size range because it is the number they know, and let the weight rating take care of itself.

It does not take care of itself. Panel weight at any given screen size varies widely between models, and the weight rating is the figure that decides whether a bracket is being asked to do something reasonable. This is a practical guide to reading both numbers, finding the ones that apply to your own television, and leaving yourself sensible margin.

The two limits are independent

A mount listed for 37 to 80 inch screens at up to 120 lb is making two separate promises. The size range describes geometry: the bracket arms can reach a bolt pattern that wide, and the plate will sit behind a panel that large without the corners fouling anything. The weight rating describes structure: the steel, the welds and the fixings were designed and specified against that load.

You have to satisfy both. A light 80 inch panel can still be outside a bracket geometrically, and a heavy 50 inch panel can sit inside the size range while exceeding the load rating. Compare that to the full motion arm listed for 13 to 42 inch screens, where the whole design is scaled to small panels and monitors, and the numbers make more sense as a pair.

Find your real panel weight

The number you want is the weight of the television without its table stand, which manufacturers usually publish as a separate specification line. Look in the manual, on the specification page for the exact model code, or on the carton if you still have it.

Do not estimate from the diagonal. Two 65 inch televisions from different years and different manufacturers can differ by a meaningful margin, and edge lit panels, backlit panels and models with a substantial rear housing all land in different places. Do not use the shipping weight either, since that figure includes the box, the stand, the remote and the packaging.

If you genuinely cannot find the figure, weigh the television with bathroom scales and a second pair of hands, or treat the heaviest plausible published weight for that screen size as your working number and pick a bracket well above it.

How much margin to leave

Rated capacity is not a target. A load rating is a limit set by the manufacturer under their own test conditions, on a wall built and fixed the way they assume, and your wall is not that wall. Choosing a bracket whose stated capacity comfortably exceeds your panel weight costs very little and removes a whole class of problems.

Full motion arms deserve extra thought here. When an arm is extended, the same panel weight acts through a much longer lever, and the load on the wall fixings rises accordingly. Measure the panel, not just the diagonal

Screen size ranges are quoted as a diagonal, but the awkward dimensions are the width and the height of the panel. Two things to check before ordering.

  • Bracket coverage. On a very wide panel with a narrow VESA pattern, the mount can end up carrying the load near the middle of a long, flexible frame. Manufacturers account for this in their size range, which is why the range exists and why exceeding it is not a small liberty.
  • Swing and clearance. A wide panel on an articulating arm sweeps a large area. Measure how far the corner travels toward a side wall, a window recess or a door before you commit to a position.

Where the wall enters the calculation

A mount rating assumes the fixings are doing their job. On a timber framed wall that means bolts into the structural studs, not into plasterboard alone. Wood studs in United States framing are commonly spaced 16 inches on center, which is why so many brackets have a wall plate wide enough to reach two of them.

Masonry changes the hardware rather than the principle. Solid brick or concrete usually takes an appropriate anchor rated for the load, installed at the depth the anchor manufacturer specifies. Hollow block, rendered surfaces and older lath walls all behave differently again and can need a specialist fixing.

Studless mounts exist for people with no accessible framing, and the no drill bracket listed for 26 to 55 inch screens is one example. Worth noting plainly: that listing states support for up to 80 lb on drywall in one place and up to 110 lb in another, which is a contradiction in the source material rather than a spread you should read as a range. Where a listing disagrees with itself on the number that matters most, the manufacturer instruction sheet is the only figure to work from.

What listings do not tell you

Load ratings are almost never accompanied by the test method, the wall construction assumed, or whether the figure applies at full extension on an articulating arm. Very few listings state the grade or diameter of the wall fixings included. Screen size ranges rarely state the maximum panel width they were validated against. None of this makes the numbers useless, but it does mean the numbers are a filter and not a guarantee.

A workable checklist

  • Panel weight without the stand, from the manufacturer.
  • Screen diagonal and panel width.
  • VESA pattern, measured center to center.
  • Wall construction and what is behind the surface.
  • A bracket from the wall and ceiling mount range that clears all four with room to spare.

Be honest with yourself at the last step. An under rated or badly fixed mount can drop a television, and the consequences are worse than the cost of a better bracket. If your wall construction is unclear, if the fixings supplied do not suit it, or if the instructions call for a step you are not equipped to do, that is the point to bring in a qualified installer rather than to improvise.
