Description
A full motion mount for a large television is the point at which a wall bracket stops being an accessory and becomes a structural fixing. The MOUNTUP MU0028 is rated for screens from 42 to 82 inches weighing up to 100 pounds, on an articulating arm that extends 16 inches from the wall and folds back to 3 inches.
That combination of size, weight and reach makes the installation the whole story. Below is what MOUNTUP specifies, the one caveat the manufacturer itself flags that most buyers misread, and what has to be right before a drill comes out.
What MOUNTUP specifies
The manufacturer states the mount fits most 42 to 82 inch flat screen and curved televisions weighing up to 100 pounds, compatible with VESA patterns from 150x100mm to 600x400mm. It is designed for mounting onto wood studs at 16 inch spacing, and onto brick and concrete walls. A separate model, MU0028-24K, is listed for 24 inch stud spacing.
Motion is stated as 5 degrees of tilt up and 10 degrees down for glare control, swivel left and right according to seating position, and extension of 16 inches with retraction back to 3 inches. Construction is a 6 support design in cold formed steel with robotic welding, and the listing states each mount is load tested before leaving the factory. The box includes instructions, velcro cable ties, a paper mounting template, a bubble level and all mounting hardware, with plus or minus 3 degrees of post installation adjustment for levelling. Mount weight is 11.7 pounds and the stated protection period is 3 years.
Buy on weight and VESA, never on screen size
The 42 to 82 inch range is the least useful number on the page, because diagonal does not determine weight. Modern LED panels have got dramatically lighter, and an 82 inch set can weigh less than an older 55 inch one. The two figures that decide compatibility are printed in the television's own manual: its actual weight, and its VESA hole pattern in millimetres.
Check both. A screen at 110 pounds does not become acceptable because 82 inches appears in the listing. A screen with a 400×400 pattern fits comfortably inside the stated 150×100 to 600×400 range; one at 800×400 does not, whatever its diagonal. This is the single most common mounting error and it costs nothing to avoid. The same discipline applies at the smaller end of the market, where the Mount-It MI-4151 for 13 to 42 inch screens lists an equally long and equally unhelpful set of diagonals.
The swivel caveat is the one buyers misread
MOUNTUP states in its own bullet that the maximum swivel angle depends on TV size. That note is doing a lot of work and it is the most misunderstood specification on any full motion mount.
The reason is geometry. When a mount swivels, the screen pivots about a point near the arm, and the far edge of the screen swings toward the wall. A 50 inch panel has 25 inches of half width to travel; an 82 inch panel has 41 inches. On the same arm, the larger screen runs out of room sooner and the achievable swivel is correspondingly smaller. So a buyer with an 82 inch television should not expect the dramatic angles shown in product photographs, which are almost always taken with a smaller screen. If wide swivel across a room is the whole reason for buying, size the expectation to the panel rather than to the marketing.
Studs, brick and the cantilever problem
This is the part that matters most, and it deserves plain language. A 100 pound television on an arm extended 16 inches from the wall does not pull on the wall plate with 100 pounds of force. Leverage multiplies it substantially, and the top fixings take the worst of it as the mount tries to rotate away from the wall.
MOUNTUP specifies wood studs at 16 inch centres, which means both fixing points land in timber rather than one in timber and one in plasterboard. Find the real studs with a detector and confirm with a small pilot hole. Drive the supplied lag bolts into the centre of each stud, not the edge. Never substitute plasterboard anchors for stud fixings on a full motion mount, whatever the anchor claims to hold, because anchors are rated for static pull and this is a dynamic cantilevered load that gets tugged every time someone repositions the screen.
On brick or concrete, use the fixings appropriate to that substrate and follow the manufacturer's instructions rather than improvising; a sleeve anchor into a mortar joint is not the same as one into solid brick. If the wall is dot and dab plasterboard over masonry, the plasterboard is decorative and the fixing must reach the masonry behind. If there is any doubt at all about the wall construction, get someone who works with walls to assess it before hanging a large television on it. Follow the supplied instructions in full, and use the paper template and the bubble level rather than eyeballing it.
What the listing does not establish
Whether the 100 pound rating holds at full 16 inch extension or only at the wall plate. Mount ratings are commonly quoted for the plate, and the safe assumption is that margin should be left when the arm is extended. The listing does not clarify.
Which fixings are supplied for brick and concrete is not itemised, only that all mounting hardware is included, and masonry fixings vary enormously by substrate. Steel gauge and arm section are not stated. The minimum stud dimension is not given. Whether the load test described is per unit or by sample is not clear. The retracted depth of 3 inches is stated, but the depth of the wall plate alone is not, which matters for anyone wanting the flattest possible look. And no tilt is available beyond 5 degrees up, which limits the mount if it must sit below eye level.
Who it suits, and who should choose something else
This suits a large screen in a room where the seating is not directly in front of the television: an open plan kitchen and living space, a corner mount, or a room where the screen needs to angle toward a dining table sometimes and a sofa at others. The 10 degrees of downward tilt is the right asymmetry for a screen mounted above eye level, the included template and level make a square installation achievable, and cable ties in the box is a small courtesy that saves a trip.
Choose something else if the studs in the wall are at 24 inch centres, because MOUNTUP publishes a separate model for that and using the wrong one means one fixing lands in nothing. Choose something else if the screen is under 42 inches or over 100 pounds. Choose something else if the television will always be watched from straight ahead, where a fixed or tilting bracket sits flatter, costs less and has nothing to work loose; a tilt only bracket is the honest answer for most living rooms.
